“Joy and Fun” represents our desire to see all employees performing work that is rewarding and allows them to lead happy and fulfilling lives. We want our people to put “Joy” into their work through their own efforts by making the most of the time they spend in the workplace. To that end, the company provides places where employees can work with a sense of “Joy and Fun.” Furthermore, if employees do work with a sense of “Joy and Fun,” their ability to generate ideas increases, their imagination expands, their efficiency also rises, and corporate value increases. This results in a “win-win” relationship for customers, shareholders, suppliers, and the society.
Translated into English as “Joy and Fun,” HORIBA motto “Omoshiro-Okashiku” is shared by HORIBARIANs worldwide.
This simple and unique motto was inspired by HORIBA’s founder Masao Horiba and was formalized in 1978 as our corporate motto.
This video shows messages from HORIBA’s founder Masao Horiba and its Chairman & Group CEO Atsushi Horiba, along with HORIBA’s internal activities that reflect the spirit of “Joy and Fun.” Find out about our “Omoi” or enthusiasm that is embodied in HORIBA philosophy.
"HONMAMON" is the essential starting point as we take on any challenge in front of us.
“HONMAMON”…
HONMAMON, derived from the Japanese word Honmono (meaning authentic), is an expression used in Kyoto which indicates the highest class of real. Each person may have a different interpretation, but we will pass on HONMAMON, a concept that our founder has cherished.
HONMAMON is born from genuine curiosity and passion, reflecting on other’s needs. HONMAMON describes the people, their actions and endeavors, and everything that is born as a result of the continuous pursuit for something better. Through these efforts, HONMAMON will have a special spirit that fascinates others.
When HONMAMON touches people's hearts, the world will begin to change for the better. With this belief, we will pursue our own HONMAMON everyday.
“Omoi” means an emotional feeling, passion, thoughts, enthusiasm, desire, aspiration, ambition, commitment, mission, and objective. We encourage our employees to have the following “Omoi,” which is the essence of acting on “Joy and Fun” through their work.
In the past few years, the number of our employees all over the world has increased dramatically as a result of acquisitions alliances and the establishment of new operating bases. With the company growing in size and conducting its operations on a global scale, it will be necessary to invest even greater effort to preserve and nurture the HORIBA corporate culture. This was what spurred us to publish the HORIBA Brand Book as the “bible” for the HORIBA group companies, enabling our employees to reconfirm their understanding of what the HORIBA brand is, and offering a basis for sharing and passing on that understanding. The HORIBA Brand Book was published on January 26, 2007 and distributed to about 4,700 employees around the world.
In addition to the HORIBA mottos “Joy and Fun” and “Omoi,” the HORIBA Brand Book also includes 36 contributions from HORIBA employees, and is available in six languages: Japanese, English, French, German, Chinese and Korean.
To share the HORIBA philosophy with all employees and pass it down to future generations, we are globally promoting the HORIBA Philosophy Project.
We held the HORIBA Philosophy Workshop in Asia in 2017 and at each group company in Europe and the United States in 2018.
We will continue to offer this workshop as an opportunity for employees to experience HORIBA's corporate culture and style by learning about the HORIBA Group's history, coming to know the background and intention of the company motto "Omoshiro Okashiku" (Joy & Fun), and discussing the HORIBA philosophy.
The BlackJack Project began in 1997 with the objective of changing the awareness and activities of employees. In 2020, 1,476 project themes were registered. In addition to themes related to improving operational efficiency and reducing costs, many themes related to developing human resources and improving organizational strength were registered.
The BlackJack Project is in its 24th year, the corporate activity and one of the features of HORIBA's corporate culture in which employees take the initiative to drive organizational reform.
We hold an internal World Cup competition among candidate proposals from each country where we operate and have employees. This competition also provides an opportunity to demonstrate to management and employees how we make our belief a reality. We see the BlackJack Project as having the important function of sharing corporate culture, experience and knowledge.
In 2013, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of HORIBA’s founding and true to our commitment to sharing awareness across national and cultural boundaries, we created our One Company Song, “Joy & Fun,” which can be sung by all HORIBA Group company employees around the world.
