Understanding the molecular structure and processes at the particle-liquid interface, from initial formulation to final manufacture, is critical to the performance of suspensions and emulsions. Among the most useful and important processes in this regard is the liquid relaxation time, from which particle surface “wettability” can be quantified. Recent advances in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provide a non-invasive and non-destructive method to routinely analyze relaxation time in samples at any concentration. Here, Dr. Graham Fairhurst introduces the NEW Mageleka MagnoMeter XRS spectrometer, a bench-top NMR instrument, and shows how it can provide particle characterization insights that are not otherwise available from traditional techniques such as particle sizing, zeta potential, and rheology. A variety of case studies and application examples will be discussed from research and development, quality control/quality assurance, and materials processing contexts.
